The inaugural meeting at Llangathen in Carmarthenshire

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007

Many people who had travelled from all over Wales and a number from across the border in England attended meeting the public meeting, held on Sunday 3rd June in the village hall at Llangathen, Carmarthenshire.

The battle of Coed Llathen was fought on 2nd June 1257 and the meeting was, specially set to be as close as possible to the 850th anniversary of the battle.

After assembling at the village hall, those who were present, walked to a near by viewpoint from which the battle field could best be seen and discussed the likely battle tactics, before visiting some of the named places associated with the slaughter [battle of Coed Llathen/Cymmerau].

A public meeting to discuss the need for a Welsh Battlefield Society was held after lunch in Llangathen village hall. Firstly, the history of the Save Bryn Glas campaign group was explained by its chairman Albert Ward, and the future prospects were then discussed.

Those present then decided to form a Welsh Battle Fields Association - Cymdeithas Maesydd Gâd Cymru and to work with all interested other bodies in Wales and with the Sealed Knot Society and the [English and Scottish] ‘Battle Field Trusts’ to promote knowledge of these battle fields and to commemorate them.
